Bien vite, Hamlet annonce son retour au Danemark suite à l'attaque de pirates. Fort de cette information, Claudius organise un face à face entre Laërte et Hamlet et pour s'assurer la mort de ce dernier, il enduit de poison la lame de l'épée de Laërte ainsi que la coupe de vin d'Hamlet. Au cours du combat, Gertrude boit le breuvage empoisonné et meurt. Dans l'assaut, Laërte touche Hamlet et se blesse aussi. Il ne tarde pas à succomber. Hamlet a tout juste le temps d'en finir avec Claudius avant d'expirer à son tour. Fortinbras, seigneur norvégien qui s'apprêtait à déclarer la guerre au Danemark, arrive à Elseneur où l'histoire de Hamlet lui est contée.
